I think that this book is okey-dokey its really weird, but its cool to read because of all the different perspectives on it all. Its neat because one event had all the different reactions in the kids, Cody thought it was his fault that his dad left, because he was bad and never listened. Ezra didn’t have a clue about it, and poor little Jenny just knew that her Daddy was gone, and she wanted to know when he was coming back, then later on she realized he left, and talked to Ezra about it. I just think that Pearl was inconsiderate her children needed to know i know that if my dad left my mom i sure as heck would have wanted to know and if my mom wouldn’t have told me i would have been extremely mad at her and held a grudge. In a way that might have happened in the book with mainly Cody, but i don’t think that’s what Tyler had intended for it to look like. I thought it was nifty in the end for Beck to come to the funeral and let it be know (atleast to Cody) why he left.

In Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant The 4 main characters are the mother Pearl Tull and Her 3 children, Cody, Ezra, and Jenny. I>n the beginning it seemed like a happy family with a bit of a downside like any other average suburban family. Beck the father had a job with the Tanner corp. which required a lot of transfers, so his family had to move around frequently. One night when Beck got home, he told Pearl he was leaving, and that he wouldn’t be coming back, not even to visit the kids. After Beck left, he mailed checks each month to help the family get by but that wasn’t enough to keep the family content, so Pearl got a job at the local grocery store. With the new stress of the job, and having to do all the motherly duties around the house it took a harsh toll on Mrs. Tull, and she wasn’t very pleasant to be around a lot of the time. After the kids grew up and moved out (except Ezra) the kept their distance,but still kept in touch. Ezra stayed there the whole time, and took care of his mother, and took a partnership in a restaurant, which later led to an ownership. Jenny went to college, and got into her first marriage, with Harley, which turned out to be a disappointment and led to a divorce. Jenny then wen through 2 more marriages the 2nd gave her her only biological child Becky. Jenny had a rough upbringing of Becky, with abuse problems, which led to a nervous breakdown, and her trying to fix her problems. The last marriage was to a man who had 6 children ,and no wife. Cody stole Ezra’s Fiancee Ruth, and married her, and had a kid Luke. In the End Pearl dies in her sleepafter a night of Ezra reading her old diary entries. At Pearls funeral Beck comes, and explains to Cody the reason of him leaving is that she wore him out, and that it just wasn’t happy with all the arguing, and bickering.

Family Dinner Drama

Ezra was Pearl Tulls second child, he was very calm and dainty, unlike the other 2 of his siblings. He was the type of guy that was gorgeous but you couldn’t tell by the way he treated himself. It was the typical mother son relationship that the mother wanted something way different that the child, Ezra loved food and cooking and his mommy wanted him to be a teacher. Pearl claimed that he was the one who had the patience to deal with it and she believed he could have even been a Proffesor at a college and make his dues. When he was old enough to get a job he took a position as the salad chef at Mrs. Scarlatti’s resturant after awhile he got gradual promotions and then a sudden draft notice took him away from his loved position. After an honorable dischard due to sleepwalking he went back to his passion of cooking. Not too soon after he became partners with Mrs. Scarlatti and helped run the buisness. After his partnership in the store he often took his family to his resturant to have a peaceful formal dinner but everytime this happened the dinner was cut short with drama.

Ex. In attempt at one dinner Jenny showed up not knowing of the planned arrangments and joined the family. (Earlier in the book Mrs. Tull caught Jenny kissing with Josiah (Ezra’s bestfriend who everyone thought was retarted because of his large size, and stutter)) At the resturant Jenny and Josiah saw each other and Pearl thought of it as a way to comfortable meeting so she exchanged rude words (like cheap little tramp) to Jenny and ran out of the resturant and ended the “dinner”.

In the Begining, this book is super weird.. Pearls (the mother) first child Cody was sick with Croup, due to her not wanting to loose a kid she came up with the idea of them to have an extra mother and the fact that she wants some “extra” kids. Its kinda like a spare tire arrangment, then they get recycled and turned into the grungies at the kids playgrounds. Other than the weird kid analogy Pearl is blind and on her deathbed dying recalling good and bad memories while her second child Ezra sits near her catering to her because of her illness. Pearl is Married to a man named Beck who works for the Tanner Corporation and has to transfer alot because of the new oppertunities for money, and all in the first part he leaves Ezra in Baltimore, Maryland! After Becks departure Pearl can not manage to tell the kids so she just goes on about her buisness and gets a job “as to pass the time”.

Anne Tyler was born Minnneapolis, Minnesota on October 25, 1941. In her childhood her family moved around alot to find a suitable place for the kids to grow up and, In their search they found a small comunity in North Carolina. Tyler graduated from Duke University in 1960, and continued her studies in Russian studies at the Columbian Universtiy in New York. as a young child staring at around 7 anne was already starting to write stories and smaller books. In 1963 Tyler married an Iranian Psychaitrist and had 2 kids. Tylers’ book, “Breathing Lessons” won the pulitzer prize in 1969. Anne Tylers’ other books like “The Accidental Tourist” was awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award 1985, some of Tylers other 17 books won also won other smaller awards. THis is her 9th book and it has been a finalist for the Pulitzer and Faulkner Awards in 1983. Anne was not big on public outings so she often made herself available through email and phone interviews. Tyler considers Dinner at the Homesick Resturant her best work.
